Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner initially thought Daniel Ricciardo was joking about his switch to Renault in 2019, according to Sky Sports F1.
Ricciardo reportedly called Horner on Thursday night to notify his Red Bull Team Principal of the shocking news – which was announced publicly via press releases on Friday morning.
Sky Sports F1 says reports indicate the switch took Horner completely by surprise – just like the rest of the Formula 1 world after Ricciardo suggested last month that he’d remain with Red Bull.
Reports suggest Ricciardo chose to leave the team because of the way he was treated in comparison with teammate Max Verstappen, who was reportedly paid substantially more and given a de facto No. 1 status.
